Refund Policy

Community Education agencies may cancel any class or program that does not meet the minimum enrollment. A full refund will be issued to those who register for a class that is canceled or full. Refunds will also be given if weather or an emergency closes school districts. To drop a class you must request a refund from the agency with which you are registered three (3) working days before the class starts. No refunds will be given once the class has started.

Course Description:

This course is designed to provide entry level firefighters skills. Field time is encouraged, and many of the units are set up so they can be taught in either the classroom or the field. The field exercise for Unit 12 is required. A version of L-180, Human Factors on the Fireline, has been included as part of this course. Credit should be issued for both S-130 and L-180 upon completion of this course.

Objectives:
  • Explain what the LCES (Lookouts, Communications, Escape Routes, and Safety Zones) system is and how it relates to the Standard Firefighting Orders.
  • Construct fireline to required standards using various methods.
  • Strengthen, reinforce, and use holding actions on a fireline.
  • Extinguish the fire with or without the use of water.
  • Complete assigned tasks in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Given an assignment in a wildfire environment, describe factors in that environment which could impact safety.

We will be conducting field exercises rain, snow or shine so bring appropriate field clothing and leather boots or hard-toe boots which are required to be worn during the outdoor exercises! Bring a rain jacket, bug spray, sunscreen,etc.
NOTE:Nomex shirts will be provided along with gloves, hardhat, ear, and eye protection; you are not required to bring your own, but you can if you wish.  Synthetic clothing will not be allowed on the field days.

Pre-Course Work:
Please note due to Department of Homeland Security requirements, in order to be “red carded” by any wildland fire agency you must take the on-line courses: IS-100 Introduction to ICS and IS-700 National Incident Management System, in addition to S-130, S-190, L-180.  It is recommended you take these courses before class.
